The large scale integration of renewable energies in a country’s energy matrix impacts on its supply safety. INESC TEC, alongside REN and REE have developed the RESERVAS software, product of a R&D project during the period from 2006 to 2010, to evaluate the safety of energy supply on the Iberian Peninsula (Portugal and Spain) until the year of 2025.

Due to the success of the aforementioned project, REN has signed a new R&D project with INESC TEC named MORA – Model for Operational Reserve Assessment. The new proposal intends to develop a new tool with emphasis on the operational relations between areas, aiming for the Iberian market on southern Europe.

In this new challenge, all the models developed during the RESERVAS software will be revisited and updated to a multi-area context. In this framework, the objective of large scale renewables integration, with a maximum utilization of the existent resources, shall surpass frontiers and be evaluated on the electrical interconnections between the countries.

In addition to the development related to supply security in a multi-area context, a new module for the evaluation of the impact of electrical vehicles on reliability indexes will also be added to the tool.

INESC TEC will count with the partnership and technical support from INESC P&D Brasil. INESC P&D Brasil has a qualified team that took part on the development of the RESERVAS software and will now support INESC TEC on this new proposal. The project will be jointly developed by the three institutions, and promises to be a successful initiative that will result in improved performance for a better planning. Furthermore, expansions of the generation systems and, consequently, an even better assistance to end-consumers shall be provided.
