The “Criteria Update and Preparation of Procedures for Planning the Expansion of the Brazilian Transmission System (PLAN.E.S.T)” project aims at defining guidelines and premises for the assessment and updating of criteria and preparation of procedures and methodologies for planning the Brazilian transmission system expansion, focusing on the formulation, sizing and technical-economic analysis of expansion alternatives. By structuring this project, it was possible to propose and detail the steps of the planning process, focusing on the establishment of reference alternatives, specifying the respective models and characteristics of the electric grid elements based on the planning horizon.
It is structured in eight products, to address the expectations related to the assessment of national and international practices and criteria applied to electric system expansion planning; the development of reference procedures and methodologies suitable for the current electric systems; and the revisiting of the transmission planning process in light of the ongoing energy transition in the global electric sector.
The project is coordinated by INESC R&D Brazil, in partnership with the Energy Research Company (EPE, acronym in Portuguese). The project is funded by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), the German Agency for International Cooperation.
